You read it right – we’re talkin’ PREHAB as opposed to REHAB, people.
My current favourite analogy of choice when talking about sports injuries is that participating in sport is like entering an injury casino. Every time you go for a run, ride your bike, play footy or netball, or go for a surf, you’re walking through the front door of the injury casino.
Thankfully most of the time the “house” doesn’t win (you don’t get injured), but sadly there are times when the converse happens and you suffer an injury. The intention of any good prehabilitation program is to try and tilt the odds in your favour for when you walk onto the playing field and enter the injury casino.
Two particular areas of interest for the NCCP team at the moment are hamstrings tears and ACL ruptures. These are two of the most significant causes of missed games of football (all codes), basketball and netball around the world, and so there is an ever-expanding body of research into how to lessen the likelihood of these injuries occurring.
We are well placed to use this growing knowledge base because we have the technology that these laboratories are using:
- real-time video and forceplate technology in the Zebris Force Distribution Treadmill which allows us to quantify at-risk movements and joints.
- ViMove technology to assess acceleration and movement in the field
- a prototype hamstrings strength training and assessment machine for world’s best practice hamstring prevention
Most importantly we have the experience to marry these various technologies into a coherent preventative picture for an individual athlete. So come on down if you’re participating in an at-risk sport (AFL, rugby league, union, soccer, netball or basketball) – we’ve got what you KNEEd to beat the Injury Casino at your own game!
